2013 National Healthcare Disparities Report

Description

The purpose of the National Healthcare Disparities Report (NHDR) is to identify the differences or gaps through which some populations receive poor or worse care than others and to track how these gaps are changing over time. This report measures trends in effectiveness of care, patient safety, timeliness of care, patient centeredness, and efficiency of care.

The 2013 report presents expanded analyses on quality of care and access to care for people with disabilities, who represent 20 percent of the adult population. This group in particular is expected to continue to increase in the upcoming years due to the aging “baby boom” generation. Priority populations, such as individuals with disabilities, are a central theme of the 2013 report. Adults with multiple chronic conditions are also included in this year’s report and are now considered a new priority population experiencing health care disparities.

The report includes the following sections:
  • Highlights
  • Introduction and methods
  • Effectiveness of care for common clinical conditions
    • Cancer
    • Cardiovascular disease
    • Chronic kidney disease
    • Diabetes
    • HIV and AIDS
    • Mental health and substance abuse
    • Musculoskeletal diseases
    • Respiratory diseases
  • Effectiveness of care across the lifespan
    • Maternal and child health
    • Lifestyle modification
    • Functional status preservation and rehabilitation
    • Supportive and palliative care
  • Patient safety
  • Timeliness
  • Patient centeredness
  • Care coordination

The NHDR is complemented by its companion report, the National Healthcare Quality Report, which uses the same quality measures as the NHDR to provide a comprehensive overview of the quality of health care in America.
